Goa Police Intensify Crackdown on Drug Peddlers Near Educational Institutions

In a decisive move to safeguard students and communities, the Goa police have meticulously prepared a comprehensive list of drug peddlers who are actively operating in the vicinity of schools and colleges across the state. Director General of Police Alok Kumar has confirmed that both the North and South Goa district police forces have finalized this list, with immediate action planned to arrest these individuals and dismantle their operations.

Rising Concerns and Government Assurance

The crackdown comes in response to escalating concerns raised by Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), who highlighted the alarming penetration of drugs into villages, schools, and colleges. During a recent session, the state government assured the House that stringent measures would be taken against all those involved in the illicit drug trade, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics abuse.

Surge in Drug Seizures and Strategic Focus

Statistics reveal a staggering nearly 700% increase in the value of drug seizures in 2025 compared to 2024, underscoring the urgency of the situation. In light of this dramatic rise, police have shifted their focus towards targeting the core narcotics network. This strategic approach aims to apprehend kingpins, major dealers, and distributors who form the backbone of the drug trade in Goa.

Action will also be taken against those exploiting modern technologies, such as the dark web, social media platforms, and cryptocurrency, to facilitate and conceal their illegal activities. By addressing these digital avenues, authorities hope to curb the sophisticated methods employed by traffickers.

Enhanced Coordination and Policy Recommendations

To effectively tackle this menace, the Goa police will coordinate closely with various state and central agencies, as well as other stakeholders. This collaborative effort includes analyzing drug-related data to identify patterns and trends, which will inform recommendations for policy changes to the government.

Ensuring time-bound coordination with forensic science laboratories is a priority, aimed at securing early test results in cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. This expedited process is expected to strengthen legal proceedings and ensure swift justice.

Task Force and Intelligence Development

A dedicated task force has been established to develop actionable intelligence, enabling rigorous enforcement of the NDPS Act and related laws. The primary objective is to maintain a vigilant check on drug abuse, protecting vulnerable populations, particularly youth in educational settings, from the detrimental effects of narcotics.

This multi-faceted initiative reflects Goa's commitment to creating a drug-free environment, leveraging data-driven strategies and inter-agency cooperation to combat the evolving challenges posed by the drug trade.
