A 23-year-old college student in North Goa allegedly died by suicide after facing severe online trolling and legal repercussions following a viral video that showed him dumping garbage by the roadside. The incident has sparked outrage and calls for justice from the victim's family, who are demanding the arrest of the individual who filmed and posted the video.
The Incident
The victim, identified as Samuel Garvin de Braganca, took his own life on Thursday night in the bathroom of his home in Mapusa, a town in North Goa. According to a senior police official, the young man had been under immense stress after a video of him discarding a garbage bag on the roadside went viral on social media platforms.
The video, shot by an unknown person, showed Samuel dumping the garbage bag. The person who recorded the video later uploaded it online, leading to widespread trolling and harassment. In addition to the online abuse, a formal complaint was filed against Samuel at the Mapusa police station, prompting legal action.
Legal Action and Investigation
A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against Samuel under Section 271 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to negligent acts likely to spread infection of a disease dangerous to life, as well as under the Goa Biodegradable Garbage Control Act. Samuel was summoned to the police station and issued a notice under the relevant legal provisions.
Following his death, the family members demanded the arrest of the person who filmed and shared the video. They alleged that the online trolling and legal action drove Samuel into depression, ultimately leading to his tragic decision.
Chief Minister's Response
Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant expressed his condolences and directed the police to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Sawant described Samuel's death as unfortunate and assured that a detailed probe would be carried out to uncover all aspects of the case.
Family's Grief and Demand for Justice
Samuel's family, speaking to the media, revealed that he had been suffering from depression after being targeted online. They emphasized that the video was taken without his consent and that the subsequent trolling and legal proceedings were overwhelming for him. The family has called for strict action against the person responsible for filming and uploading the video, arguing that their actions directly contributed to Samuel's death.
The police have not yet made any arrests in connection with the case, but the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the video and the subsequent online harassment.
Broader Implications
This tragic incident highlights the severe consequences of online trolling and the need for greater awareness about cyberbullying. It also raises questions about the proportionality of legal actions taken against individuals for minor offenses, especially when such actions can have devastating psychological effects. The case has reignited discussions about mental health support for young people and the responsibility of social media platforms in curbing harassment.
As the investigation continues, the community in Goa mourns the loss of a young life and hopes that justice will be served. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the power of social media and the importance of empathy and restraint in online interactions.
