Tourist from Indore Dies in Goa After Club Visit, Police Register Unnatural Death Case
A tragic incident unfolded in Goa over the weekend, resulting in the death of a young tourist. Ishan Singh Badgujar, a 21-year-old from Indore, passed away on Saturday after he and a group of friends visited a club in Vagator. The group of nine friends had arrived in Goa on Thursday for what was intended to be a vacation.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Fatality
According to Anjuna Police Inspector Suraj Gawas, the events began on Friday evening when Badgujar and his friends went to a club. Around midnight, Badgujar started feeling unwell and was immediately taken to a private hospital in Anjuna for medical attention. As his condition continued to worsen, doctors at the private facility advised transferring him to the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa for more advanced care.
Tragically, by the time they reached the district hospital, Badgujar had succumbed. Medical professionals at the hospital declared him brought dead upon arrival. The Anjuna police have officially registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate event.
Postmortem Findings and Official Statements
PI Gawas provided further details regarding the medical examination. Doctors at the Goa Medical College conducted a postmortem on Badgujar's body. They verbally informed both the police and the grieving family that the preliminary cause of death appeared to be a heart attack. However, they have not yet provided a written report confirming the exact cause of death, leaving some ambiguity in the official record.
Political Reaction and Calls for Investigation
The incident has drawn significant attention from local authorities. Siolim MLA Delilah Lobo reacted strongly to the news, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation. She stated that she instructed the Anjuna Police Inspector to diligently probe the cause of death, particularly highlighting concerns about potential drug involvement.
"If the death is due to drug overdose, then police should find out the source. Police should find out from where they purchased the drugs. Somebody coming to Goa and dying due to drug overdose brings a bad name to Goa," MLA Lobo asserted. Her comments underscore the broader implications for Goa's reputation as a tourist destination.
Demand for Regulatory Changes in Goa's Nightlife
Beyond the immediate investigation, MLA Lobo pointed to systemic issues within Goa's entertainment sector. She criticized the current lack of regulation, noting that Goa does not have any specific club policy. According to her, many establishments obtain permits to operate as restaurants but subsequently transform into clubs without proper oversight.
Lobo advocated for the government to implement a comprehensive club policy to ensure better management and safety standards. This call for reform highlights ongoing debates about balancing tourism growth with public health and safety in the state.
The case remains under active investigation by the Anjuna police as they await the formal postmortem report and continue to gather evidence regarding the events leading to Badgujar's untimely death.
