From September 2025 to the present, at least 95 cases of gold chain snatching have been officially reported. Officials caution that the actual number of incidents is likely higher, as many victims opt not to file formal complaints. This reluctance often stems from a desire to avoid the protracted and cumbersome procedures associated with police investigations and court hearings.

An inspector from the Bhubaneswar police department explained the trend, stating, "Gold has always been a prime target for criminals, but the recent surge in prices has made it even more lucrative. Snatchers are acutely aware that even a small gold chain can fetch a substantial amount in the market." The inspector further revealed that thieves are expanding their targets, now including residential break-ins to loot gold jewelry and ornaments.

Sahadev Swain, a local jewelry store manager, commented, "Gold may traditionally symbolize prosperity and wealth, but currently, it is increasingly becoming a magnet for opportunistic crime."

Sakuntala Mohanty, a victim who lost her gold chain while returning home from a morning walk in the Sailashree Vihar area, recounted her traumatic experience. "It happened in mere seconds. Before I could even react or comprehend the situation, the snatchers had already sped away on a motorcycle," she said.
Citizens and community leaders are voicing concerns over public safety. Rajat Swain, president of a resident welfare association, emphasized, "It is the fundamental duty of the police to ensure our safety and the protection of our property. We urge law enforcement to intensify their crackdown on these criminals." There is a growing fear that unless decisive action is taken, the city could witness a further escalation in such crimes.
