Two Individuals Detained Under Goondas Act for Ganja Possession in Tamil Nadu
In a significant legal development in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu, two people previously arrested for possession of ganja have now been detained under the stringent Goondas Act. Arrest and Initial Judicial Custody
On January 27, the Rajapalayam South police apprehended Krishnaraja, aged 28, and Saravanakumar, aged 25, near the PSK Nagar bus stop in Rajapalayam. The arrest was made after they were found in possession of a substantial quantity of ganja, weighing approximately 11 kilograms. Following their arrest, the duo was remanded to judicial custody as part of standard legal procedures for such cases.
Recommendation and Detention Order Under Goondas Act
In an effort to curb potential recidivism, Virudhunagar district superintendent of police (SP) D Kannan took proactive measures by recommending the detention of Krishnaraja and Saravanakumar under the Goondas Act. This recommendation was based on concerns that the individuals might engage in similar illegal activities upon release, posing a threat to public order and safety.
Acting on this recommendation, Virudhunagar district collector N O Sukhaputra issued a formal detention order on Friday. The order authorizes the detention of both Krishnaraja and Saravanakumar under the provisions of the Goondas Act, a law designed to detain habitual offenders and prevent them from committing further crimes.
Current Status and Implications
Subsequent to the detention order, Krishnaraja and Saravanakumar have been transferred and lodged at the Madurai Central Prison.
