Gorakhpur Police Dismantle Temple Chain-Snatching Racket, Apprehend 16 Suspects

In a significant crackdown on organized crime, Gorakhpur police have successfully busted a chain-snatching racket that was operating in the vicinity of the Tarkulha Devi Temple in Chauri Chaura. The operation resulted in the arrest of 16 persons, including eight women, marking a major breakthrough in curbing thefts targeting devotees.

Gang Targeted Women Devotees During Peak Temple Hours

According to police officials, the gang was strategically active during temple fairs and peak rush hours, specifically targeting women devotees who were standing in queues for darshan. The modus operandi involved exploiting crowded conditions to stealthily snatch jewellery from unsuspecting victims.

The case came to light after three women filed reports regarding the theft of their valuable jewellery. Among the victims were Sheela Devi and her sister Shakuntala Devi, residents of Deoria district, who had visited the temple to attend a family mundan ceremony. In the bustling crowd, their gold chain and ring were stolen, highlighting the gang's brazen tactics.

In a similar incident, Suman Yadav, also from Deoria, lost a gold chain weighing approximately 10 to 12 grams, further underscoring the gang's pattern of preying on devotees during religious gatherings.

Coordinated Police Action Leads to Arrests and Seizures

The arrests were made following a crucial tip-off and a well-coordinated action led by Inspector Ved Prakash Sharma and Outpost In-Charge Saurabh Jha. Circle Officer of Chauri Chaura, Manish Kumar Sharma, confirmed that the operation was executed with precision to nab the suspects.

During the raid, police seized five vehicles and other incriminating materials from the accused, which are expected to provide further evidence in the ongoing investigation. The seizure of vehicles indicates the gang's mobility and organized nature in carrying out their crimes.

Interrogation Underway to Uncover Wider Criminal Network

Interrogation of the arrested individuals is currently underway to ascertain their involvement in similar crimes across other areas. Police are delving into the gang's connections and potential links to broader criminal networks, aiming to prevent future incidents and ensure public safety.

This crackdown serves as a stern warning to criminal elements operating in religious and crowded spaces, reinforcing the police's commitment to maintaining law and order. Authorities have urged devotees to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately to help combat such crimes effectively.
