A coordinated eviction operation was conducted along the railway tracks in Guwahati on Tuesday, led by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in collaboration with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and railway department officials. The drive aimed to remove illegal encroachments on railway land.
Details of the Eviction Drive
During the operation, numerous makeshift houses and temporary structures erected along the railway tracks were dismantled. GRP officer-in-charge (OC) Abhishek Bodo stated, “We dismantled about 40 to 50 makeshift tents. They were staying there illegally.” The eviction drive took place near the Guwahati Railway Station, and Bodo confirmed that the exercise is ongoing and will continue.
Profile of the Settlers
Bodo noted that most of the settlers are outsiders from various states, including individuals of Bangladeshi origin who are homeless. He remarked, “We conduct eviction drives every two or three months. However, despite repeated drives, we have no idea how they return and start residing at the same spot again.”
Drug Activity and Safety Concerns
The trackside area has reportedly become a drug hotspot, raising safety and sanitation issues. Bodo explained, “It is a big problem for us as it is an open area and we have very less man-power due to which the execution cannot be 100%. We have a track patrolling team who patrol the track areas everyday, but these addicts often make a run when they see any of our officers.” He added that drug supplies arrive from different parts of the state and alleged transactions occur along the tracks. With portions of Fancy Bazar and Paltan Bazar connected to the railway line, the activity has created an unsafe environment for local residents.
