Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau Nabs Police Sub-Inspector in Bribery Sting Operation
In a significant crackdown on corruption, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Vadodara, Gujarat, executed a meticulously planned operation on Sunday, resulting in the arrest of a police sub-inspector. The officer, identified as Pankajkumar Patel, a PSI (Class-III) attached to the Khambhat City police station, was apprehended for allegedly soliciting and accepting a bribe of Rs 30,000. This illicit payment was demanded in exchange for providing a favourable police opinion on land transaction approvals governed by the Disturbed Areas Act.
Details of the Alleged Corruption Scheme
According to official statements from the ACB, the case originated from a complaint filed by a local businessman and his partner. The duo owned land in Khambhat city and had subdivided it into plots for sale. However, since the property fell under the jurisdiction of the Disturbed Areas Act—a legislation designed to regulate property transactions in communally sensitive areas—they were required to obtain formal permission from the prant office in Khambhat. As part of the standard procedure, their application was forwarded to the Khambhat City police station for a mandatory police report, a critical step in the approval process.
PSI Pankajkumar Patel, who was temporarily deputed at the Lal Darwaza Police Chowki, was assigned to review the case and submit his assessment. During discussions concerning two separate applications submitted by the complainants, Patel allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000 per application, totalling Rs 30,000. He purportedly promised to issue a positive report in return for this payment, exploiting his official position to extort money from the citizens.
The ACB's Swift Action and Trap Operation
Unwilling to succumb to the corrupt demands, the complainant took a bold step by approaching the ACB office in Anand to lodge a formal complaint. Demonstrating prompt responsiveness, the ACB team swiftly devised a trap operation to catch the accused in the act. On Sunday, the operation was set into motion near the Lal Darwaza Police Chowki, where the complainant was instructed to engage with Patel as per the initial arrangement.
During the encounter, the PSI allegedly reiterated his demand for the bribe and proceeded to accept the marked currency notes from the complainant. At that precise moment, the ACB team intervened, apprehending Patel red-handed. The officials successfully recovered the entire bribe amount of Rs 30,000 from his possession, securing concrete evidence for the case.
Legal Proceedings and Broader Implications
Following the arrest, a formal case has been registered against PSI Pankajkumar Patel under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of corruption within law enforcement agencies and underscores the critical role of vigilant institutions like the ACB in upholding integrity. The Disturbed Areas Act, intended to maintain communal harmony by regulating property transfers, was ironically misused in this instance, pointing to potential vulnerabilities in its implementation.
The arrest serves as a stern warning to public officials engaged in malpractices, reinforcing the commitment of authorities to root out corruption. It also emphasizes the importance of citizen participation in reporting such offences, as demonstrated by the complainant's courage in approaching the ACB. As the investigation progresses, further details may emerge regarding any possible accomplices or systemic issues within the police department.
