In a tragic incident that highlights the perils of reckless driving, a 58-year-old businessman lost his life after being struck by a speeding car in Gurgaon's upscale DLF Phase-2 area. The police have arrested a 20-year-old driver, who was operating the vehicle without a valid licence, and the 40-year-old owner of the car for their alleged roles in the fatal hit-and-run.
The Fatal Collision and Immediate Aftermath
The victim, identified as Amitabh Jain, a resident of DLF Phase-2, was cycling near Akashneem Marg on Wednesday evening when the accident occurred. According to police officials, a Hyundai Santro, being driven at high speed, rammed into Jain from behind. The impact was severe, and the cyclist was thrown off his vehicle.
Jain was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital by bystanders. Despite receiving medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries. The incident sent shockwaves through the local community and his family, who were devastated by the sudden loss.
Police Investigation Leads to Dual Arrests
Acting on a formal complaint lodged by the victim's cousin, the DLF Phase-2 police station registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched a swift investigation. Using technical and eyewitness evidence, the police team zeroed in on the accused.
The driver was identified as Sahil (20), originally from Tatanagar in Jharkhand and currently living in Faridabad's SGM Nagar. Sahil, who works as a helper at a private club in Gurgaon, was returning from duty at the time of the crash. Investigations revealed two critical and damning facts: Sahil did not possess a valid driving licence, and the car involved was not insured.
"He was driving the Santro at a high speed, lost control, and hit the cyclist from behind. Despite knowing he had no legal authority to drive, he continued to operate the car," stated a police spokesperson.
The probe also led to the arrest of the car's registered owner, Gagandeep Nagar (40), a resident of Nawada in Faridabad. He was taken into custody for the grave offence of knowingly allowing an unlicensed individual to drive his vehicle. The offending car has been seized by the police as evidence.
Court Proceedings and Family's Grief
Both accused were presented before a local court on Friday, which remanded them to judicial custody. The police have clarified that the accused and the victim were strangers to each other, ruling out any premeditated motive. An investigation into the complete sequence of events is still underway.
The tragedy has left Amitabh Jain's family in profound sorrow. He is survived by his wife, Ritu Jain, who works at the Parliament Museum in Delhi; a 29-year-old son employed with an IT company in London; and a 25-year-old daughter based in Bengaluru. Upon receiving the tragic news, Jain's son immediately flew back to Gurgaon to be with the family.
Adding to the family's anguish is the poignant detail that Jain had celebrated his 58th birthday just on October 17. He and his wife had been married for over three decades. A family member shared that Jain was an entrepreneur who previously ran a departmental store in Delhi's Malka Ganj and was also involved in security and maintenance businesses.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of negligent driving and the illegal practice of allowing unlicensed individuals to operate motor vehicles, leading to irreversible loss of life.
