Gurgaon: Two days after a 62-year-old man was bludgeoned to death by two minors near Fazilpur Chowk in Farrukhnagar, the victim has been identified as Ram Avtar, aged 55. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
On the day of the incident, Avtar, who worked at a stone crusher shop in Farrukhnagar, sought money from his nephew to purchase liquor in the evening. After consuming alcohol, he sat on the roadside, where he had an argument with two minors who were also drunk. The argument soon turned violent, and the minors attacked him with a brick and stones, causing fatal injuries. They also checked his pockets after killing him with the intent to steal and fled the spot.
Police said Avtar was a habitual offender and would often borrow money from his relatives to buy liquor. He would frequently stay away from home. Hence, no one checked his whereabouts immediately, even after he did not return home on April 26, the day he was murdered. The family lodged a complaint on Monday, following which the victim was identified, an officer said.
According to police, a night watchman alerted authorities after finding the body on Sunday at 1:30 am. He said he noticed a man lying near a shop in an intoxicated condition. When he called out to him, the man did not respond. Upon returning to the spot at around 3:30 am, he found the man dead, with blood oozing from his head. A blood-stained stone and tile were also found nearby. A police team reached the scene after receiving information and called in crime scene and fingerprint teams to examine the area. A murder case was registered at the Farukhnagar police station.
During the investigation, police found that two juveniles went to Fazilpur Chowk to buy cigarettes when they encountered Avtar, who was intoxicated. The two boys teased the victim, who was sitting on the roadside, leading to an argument. They then attacked him with a brick and a stone, causing fatal injuries. They also checked his pockets after killing him with the intent to steal, said Sandeep Turan, police spokesperson.
