Gurgaon Police Imposes Rs 8 Lakh Fine on 949 Commuters in Lane Rule Crackdown
In a significant move to curb traffic violations, Gurgaon police have fined 949 commuters a total of Rs 8 lakh during a special 19-day drive conducted from February 1 to February 19. This initiative targeted drivers flouting lane rules, which authorities identify as a major contributor to road accidents and traffic congestion in the city.
Intensive Monitoring and Enforcement Across Key Stretches
Police teams were strategically deployed across critical stretches of Gurgaon to monitor vehicles not adhering to designated lanes. According to officers, wrong-lane driving and abrupt lane changes are among the primary causes of road accidents, posing severe risks to both motorists and pedestrians. The enforcement focused on ensuring strict compliance with lane markings, which are designed to streamline traffic flow and enhance safety.
As per established norms, the leftmost lane is reserved for heavy vehicles, the middle lane for light vehicles, and the right lane for overtaking. Police emphasized that the objective of this campaign was to make traffic movement in Gurgaon more organized and smooth, thereby reducing accident rates and improving overall road safety.
Historical Context and Penalty Structure
This recent drive builds on ongoing efforts to address lane-change violations. In the previous year, police challaned 75,280 motorists for improper lane changes, and in January this year alone, 3,555 violators were penalized for similar offenses. A traffic official noted that in January, a total of 1,31,423 challans were issued for various traffic violations across the city, highlighting the scale of enforcement activities.
The penalty for lane-change violations is structured to deter repeat offenses. For the first violation, a fine of Rs 500 is levied, but if the offense is repeated, the violator must pay Rs 1,500 each time. This escalating penalty system aims to encourage compliance and reduce habitual infractions.
Awareness Programs and Future Initiatives
In addition to penal actions, the police department conducted comprehensive awareness programs and workshops for key stakeholders, including truck union representatives, company drivers, bus and school bus drivers, and auto-rickshaw drivers. These sessions were designed to sensitize participants about the importance of adhering to traffic rules and the critical role of lane discipline in preventing accidents.
Officials have announced that similar special drives will continue in the coming days to ensure stricter compliance and foster safer roads across Gurgaon. By combining enforcement with education, authorities aim to create a more disciplined driving culture and reduce traffic-related incidents in the city.
