Gurgaon Police Intensify Crackdown on Drunk Driving with FIR Registrations

In a significant move to bolster road safety, police in Gurgaon have announced that they will now register First Information Reports (FIRs) against motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol. This new measure adds a criminal dimension to the existing penalties, which include challans, suspension of driving licenses, and impounding of vehicles.

Enhanced Enforcement Measures Against Drunk Driving

Under the revised protocol, drivers who fail a breathalyser test due to excessive alcohol consumption will face immediate consequences. These include issuance of a challan, a three-month suspension of their driving license, and the registration of an FIR. Additionally, their vehicles may be impounded on the spot.

Previously, police actions were limited to challans and license suspensions, with vehicle impounding only occurring when alcohol levels surpassed the legal limit. The updated approach aims to address the shortcomings of past enforcement strategies.

Immediate Ground-Level Implementation

A traffic police officer confirmed that enforcement would be swift and rigorous. "After a drunk driver is apprehended during routine checks by traffic personnel, they will be escorted to the nearest police station for FIR registration. Alternatively, officers at the station will be promptly notified to initiate the process," the officer explained.

This immediate action is designed to streamline the legal proceedings and ensure that offenders are held accountable without delay.

Objective: Preventing Repeat Offenses and Protecting Road Users

Officials have stated that the tougher stance is primarily aimed at deterring repeat offenses and minimizing risks to other commuters. Police data reveals that 26,122 challans were issued for drunken driving in the city last year alone.

"This initiative could be a pivotal step in curbing drunk driving and saving lives on our roads. Such serious violations not only endanger the offenders themselves but also pose a lethal threat to innocent road users. We are committed to continuing these campaigns to make Gurgaon safer for everyone," emphasized a senior police officer.

Leadership and Supervision of the Crackdown

The crackdown is being executed under the directives of Police Commissioner Vikas Arora and the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rajesh Mohan. Traffic teams are conducting regular drives across the city to enforce these measures effectively.

Parallel Action Against Wrong-Side Driving

This decision mirrors the police's recent approach to wrong-side driving, particularly on highways and major arterial roads, where FIRs are now being filed more consistently. Authorities noted that challans alone were insufficient to deter habitual offenders.

Criminal cases may be registered under relevant Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) provisions, targeting both repeat offenders and first-time violators on high-speed corridors, depending on the circumstances.

In a related effort last month, 20 FIRs were registered against wrong-side drivers. Throughout 2025, approximately 2 lakh motorists were challaned for this offense.

Recent Traffic Violation Statistics

In January of this year, Gurgaon police issued a total of 1.3 lakh traffic challans. The breakdown includes:

  • 1,314 for drunk driving
  • 11,731 for wrong-side driving
  • 10,868 for speeding
  • 12,083 for wrong-side parking
  • 5,033 for driving without seat belts
  • 17,145 for riding without helmets
  • 905 for use of black films on windows
  • 3,555 for illegal lane changes

These figures underscore the scale of traffic violations in the city and highlight the necessity for stringent enforcement measures like the new FIR policy for drunk driving.
