Gurgaon Professor Suffers Injuries in Terrifying Accident Involving Uncovered GMDA Pit

A professor from Sushant University in Sector 55, Gurgaon, endured a harrowing ordeal on Saturday evening when her car slipped into an uncovered pit on Hamilton Road, near Galleria Market, resulting in multiple internal injuries. The incident, which occurred around 5 pm, has raised serious concerns about civic negligence and road safety in the area.

Details of the Accident and Rescue Efforts

Chitra Kaul, a professor in her 50s, was driving home from work when her vehicle overturned after falling into the pit. According to Kaul, the road was muddy due to recent rainfall, and there were no safety signs or barriers around the excavation site. She recounted the terrifying moments, stating, "It suddenly went all dark after my car overturned. I could not breathe, and my screams for help went unattended for a few minutes." Passers-by eventually rescued her by breaking the rear glass of the car, pulling her out after she was trapped for approximately 15 minutes.

Kaul explained that she swerved to avoid a cyclist coming from the opposite direction on the one-way road, which caused her car to veer right and slip into the ditch. She sustained injuries to her neck, back, and stomach, describing it as "the scariest 15 minutes of my life." Following the accident, she went to her brother's house in Noida, as her husband was in Mumbai.

Allegations of Negligence and Official Responses

Kaul has accused civic authorities of gross negligence, highlighting the lack of proper safety measures. She attempted to file a complaint by calling the police control room but was directed to contact the local police station instead. "I will lodge my complaint at Sector 29 police station on Wednesday against the authorities," she asserted. However, Sector 29 SHO Ravi Kumar stated that no complaint had been received so far, adding, "If a complaint is received, necessary action will be taken."

CCTV footage of the incident, which has been widely shared on social media, clearly shows the car veering off the road and falling into the uncovered pit. In response, officials from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) claimed that safety tapes and cones were installed as precautionary measures for ongoing drain development work on the stretch. They also mentioned that the pit has since been covered.

Broader Implications for Road Safety

This incident underscores critical issues in urban infrastructure management, particularly in rapidly developing areas like Gurgaon. The absence of adequate signage and barriers during construction poses significant risks to public safety. Authorities must ensure strict adherence to safety protocols to prevent such accidents in the future.

As investigations proceed, this case serves as a stark reminder of the need for accountability and improved civic oversight in maintaining road safety standards.
