In a shocking breach of trust, the Gurgaon police have apprehended a personal security officer (PSO) who is accused of absconding with a massive sum of ₹50 lakh in cash that was entrusted to him by his employer. The police have successfully recovered almost the entire amount, along with the vehicle used in the crime.
The Trusted Employee's Alleged Betrayal
The accused has been identified as Jai Pratap Singh, a 35-year-old resident of Belhar village in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district. Singh had been employed as a personal security officer with the Discovery Wine Group for a significant period of ten years, building a facade of reliability. The incident unfolded on December 10, when his employer dispatched him from their Sector-57 office with a critical task: to deliver the ₹50 lakh in cash to an acquaintance in Delhi using a company-provided car.
However, Singh never reached the intended destination. When his phone was found to be switched off, the employer grew suspicious and contacted the recipient, confirming the money had never arrived. This prompted the filing of a formal complaint at the Sector-56 police station, leading to the registration of a case under relevant legal sections.
The Investigation and Recovery of Stolen Cash
A dedicated police team from the Crime Branch in Sector-43, led by Inspector Narendra Kumar Sharma, took charge of the investigation. Their efforts culminated in the arrest of Jai Pratap Singh on December 16 from Sector-56 in Gurgaon.
During interrogation, Singh revealed his elaborate plan. After reaching Delhi, he deliberately switched off his mobile phone. He then parked the Maruti S-Presso car at the MCD parking facility near Batra Hospital, concealing the stolen cash in the vehicle's trunk. To evade detection, he traveled to the pilgrimage towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh for sightseeing, where he took the extreme step of destroying his mobile phone.
Motivation and Final Arrest
Police officials stated that the accused harbored ambitions of using the illicit funds to establish a fruit orchard in Himachal Pradesh. He had already spent approximately ₹50,000 from the stolen ₹50 lakh on his travel and other expenses during his brief fugitive period. His downfall came when he returned to Gurgaon to collect his personal belongings, where the police were waiting to apprehend him.
Acting on the information Singh provided, the investigation team recovered the S-Presso car from the MCD parking at Batra Hospital in Delhi. In a significant breakthrough, they found ₹49.5 lakh in cash still stashed in the car's trunk, recovering the vast majority of the stolen amount. The Gurgaon police's swift action prevented a major financial loss and highlighted the risks associated with moving large sums of cash.
