Gurgaon Birthday Celebration Ends in Tragedy with Fatal SUV Crash
In a devastating incident that has shocked the community, a birthday outing in Gurgaon turned fatal in the early hours of Saturday when an SUV, reportedly being driven on the wrong side, collided head-on with a scooter, resulting in the deaths of two young men. The accident occurred near Legend society in Sector 57, highlighting ongoing road safety concerns in the area.
Details of the Victims and the Fatal Collision
The two victims have been identified as Kartik Suresh, a 24-year-old student at a private university in the city, and Ritik, a resident of Motihari who worked at a call centre in Sector 24 and also drove a bike taxi to supplement his income. According to a complaint filed by Kartik's father, Mathur Shankara Narayan Suresh, Kartik had left home on the evening of April 3 to attend a friend's birthday party.
Around 2:40 AM on Saturday, Ritik was riding the scooter with registration number BR05AQ/7376, traveling from Boom Plaza via Dharmamarg Road towards Golf Course Extension Road, with Kartik seated on the pillion. Police noted ambiguity over whether Ritik was a friend or if Kartik had booked him as a bike taxi for a ride home from the party.
Near Legend society, a Tata Harrier with registration UP16EF/4574 allegedly entered their lane from the opposite direction while being driven at high speed on the wrong side, leading to a catastrophic head-on collision. The impact threw both men onto the road, causing severe head injuries.
Immediate Response and Investigation Efforts
Passersby quickly rushed to assist the victims. Ritik was transported in a private ambulance to Artemis Hospital, while Kartik remained on the road until police arrived and shifted him to a local government hospital. Tragically, both men succumbed to their injuries during treatment.
At the scene, police recovered two mobile phones. One phone received a call from a contact saved as 'AAMA', which officers answered to inform Kartik's father about the accident. Narayan then hurried to the spot and identified his son from photographs shown by locals.
Authorities documented the damaged scooter and SUV with photos before both vehicles were removed by crane and taken to the police station. Ritik's body was kept in a local mortuary for post-mortem, while Kartik's body was handed over to his family after the autopsy on Saturday.
Legal Actions and Ongoing Probe
An FIR has been registered at Sector 56 police station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including:
- 281 for rash driving
- 106 for causing death by negligence
- 324(4) for mischief
- 125(b) for acts endangering life or personal safety of others
Investigating officer Deepak confirmed that the SUV has been impounded, and the driver will be called to join the investigation. As of late Saturday, no arrests had been made in connection with this case.
Separate Accident Adds to Gurgaon's Road Safety Woes
In a related but separate incident, a 25-year-old man named Salman Hossain died after a truck hit his scooter on April 2 and fled the scene. Originally from Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, Salman worked as a vendor at a private company on Patherheri Road and lived nearby in rented accommodation.
His cousin Shahbaz informed police that he had accompanied Salman from his rented room around 1 PM and got off on the way, while Salman continued towards work. Shortly after, a truck coming from Bilaspur Chowk allegedly struck the scooter at high speed, throwing Salman onto the road. He was taken to a government hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
A case was registered at Bilaspur police station under sections 281 and 106 of the BNS after a formal complaint was submitted on Friday. Sub-inspector Ghanshyam stated that police have noted the truck's registration number, HR-47E-0802, and are actively working to trace the driver.
These back-to-back accidents underscore critical road safety issues in Gurgaon, prompting calls for stricter enforcement and public awareness campaigns to prevent such tragedies in the future.
