Gurgaon Traffic Officers Face Suspension Following Surprise Inspection
In a significant crackdown on negligence within the traffic police department, the assistant commissioner of police (traffic east), Sanjay Kumar, suspended two traffic zonal officers on Tuesday. This decisive action came after a surprise inspection conducted on February 4 uncovered serious lapses in duty at key traffic checkpoints across the city.
Details of the Inspection and Suspensions
The inspection targeted multiple locations to assess compliance with departmental orders and traffic regulations. At the Ghata Power House, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Narendra, who was posted as the zonal officer, was found absent from his designated duty point. He was immediately marked absent and suspended.
In another instance at the Faridabad–Bandhwari Toll, ASI Azad, deployed as the zonal officer, was discovered sitting inside a booth instead of actively manning the checkpoint. This checkpoint had been specifically set up for heavy vehicle checking in view of the ongoing Surajkund Mela, which attracts a large influx of visitors and vehicles. Further verification revealed that ASI Azad was not carrying the mandatory government-issued body-worn camera, constituting a serious act of negligence. Consequently, he too was suspended with immediate effect.
Impact on Traffic Regulation and Public Safety
Senior officers emphasized that such absences from duty points and failures to adhere to standard operating procedures could severely undermine traffic regulation and public safety. The Surajkund Mela has necessitated the deployment of additional traffic personnel and checkpoints to manage congestion and ensure the well-being of the public. Any lapse in these efforts poses a direct risk to orderly traffic flow and safety.
Official Statement and Future Measures
ACP Sanjay Kumar issued a stern warning, stating, "Strict adherence to duty protocols, visible presence on the ground, and use of prescribed equipment are mandatory for all officers and staff. Any sort of negligence, indiscipline, or defiance of orders will not be tolerated at any level, and similar surprise inspections and stringent action will continue in the future."
Officials confirmed that traffic police teams conduct regular surprise inspections to maintain discipline and efficiency. This recent action underscores the department's commitment to upholding high standards and ensuring that all personnel fulfill their responsibilities diligently, especially during high-traffic events like the Surajkund Mela.
