A tragic case of suspected dowry death has shaken Gurgaon, leading to the arrest of a woman's husband. The incident came to light over the weekend in the Naharpur Enclave area of the city.
Discovery of the Tragedy
On Saturday, police received critical information via an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) about a woman's death inside a locked room in Naharpur Rupa village. A police team rushed to the scene. In the presence of local residents who acted as private witnesses, the officers broke open the door. Inside, they discovered the lifeless body of 23-year-old Bulbul. Her three-month-old infant was found crying on the bed beside her.
A forensic team and personnel from the local Naharpur Rupa police post immediately began an evidence collection process, gathering fingerprints and other crucial material from the spot. The body was subsequently sent for a postmortem examination at the mortuary. After the autopsy was completed, Bulbul's remains were handed over to her grieving parents.
A History of Alleged Harassment
Bulbul, originally a resident of Padam Colony in Faridabad, had married Jagdeep (30), a resident of Naharpur Rupa, in the year 2024. Jagdeep worked at a utensils shop. According to a complaint filed by Bulbul's brother, Rajkumar, the trouble began soon after the wedding. He alleged that his sister was subjected to repeated harassment by her husband and in-laws over demands for more dowry.
The situation allegedly became so severe that Bulbul returned to her parents' home in August 2024 and stayed there for several months. She was only sent back to her matrimonial home after relatives intervened and gave assurances. However, Rajkumar claims the harassment resumed after the birth of her child.
In a chilling detail, Rajkumar stated that Bulbul called him on December 25 and told him her life was in danger. Merely two days later, on December 27, the family was informed of her death. Rajkumar has alleged foul play, asserting that his sister was killed. He also mentioned that a neighbour of the accused first alerted him that something was wrong, after which he contacted the father-in-law, who confirmed the death and asked him to collect the body.
Legal Action and Arrest
Based on the formal complaint, the Sadar police station registered a case under relevant sections of the law. Police spokesperson Sandeep Kumar confirmed that acting swiftly on the complaint, Jagdeep was arrested on Sunday from near Naharpur Rupa village. He was produced before a local court on Monday, which granted the police a one-day remand for further interrogation.
The case has once again brought the grim issue of dowry-related violence and deaths to the forefront in the National Capital Region. The police investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the young mother's death.
