Gurugram man and girlfriend arrested for wife's murder after Nepal return
A 25-year-old man from Gurugram, identified as Ankit, and his 38-year-old girlfriend, Rajni Devi, have been arrested for the murder of Ankit's 22-year-old wife, Madhu. The duo had been on the run for over a month before secretly returning to Manesar, where police apprehended them following a tip-off.
Murder planned in advance, body stuffed in bathroom
According to police, Ankit allegedly planned the murder in advance. On May 21, he took Madhu to a rented room occupied by Rajni in Manesar and shot her dead. The body was then locked inside the bathroom. Ankit had allegedly procured the pistol used in the murder from Uttar Pradesh about two months earlier and hid it in Rajni's room. Madhu had married Ankit in February this year and went missing on May 21.
Accused travelled to Haridwar to 'wash away sins' before fleeing to Nepal
After the murder, Ankit and Rajni allegedly travelled to Haridwar. Police said the duo went there in an apparent attempt to “wash away their sins” before fleeing to Nepal to evade arrest. They returned to India on June 30 and secretly came back to Manesar, where they were arrested.
Police probe possible involvement of others
The accused were produced before a court and taken on five days' police remand for questioning and recovery of evidence. Police are investigating the entire sequence of events, the procurement of the murder weapon, and whether anyone else helped the accused before or after the crime. Madhu's bullet-riddled body was recovered from a room in Manesar on May 22.
Family suspected husband's involvement
Madhu's in-laws allegedly told her family that she had run away from home. Her relatives searched for her and contacted her in-laws but did not get a satisfactory response. The family subsequently suspected the involvement of Ankit and his family in her disappearance. Police questioning revealed that Ankit and Rajni had allegedly been in a relationship for the past three years.
