Guwahati Police Achieve Significant Success in Phone Recovery Operations
In a notable effort to combat theft and loss of mobile devices, officers from the Basistha police station in Guwahati have successfully recovered 76 phones since the start of this year up until Sunday. These devices, which were either lost or stolen, have been diligently tracked and returned to their rightful owners, showcasing the police's commitment to public safety and property recovery.
Tracking and Coordination Across States Lead to Recoveries
According to police officials, the recoveries were made possible through continuous monitoring and effective coordination with law enforcement agencies in other states. Deepjyoti Engti, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Basistha police station, explained that many of the phones were traced to various districts within Assam, as well as to states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. From these locations, the devices were tracked down and retrieved, highlighting the extensive reach of the investigation efforts.
Engti further noted that most of these phones are typically snatched by truck drivers and then sold to buyers in other states at reduced prices. Alternatively, they are lost by individuals while traveling on trains or buses. This pattern underscores the common scenarios leading to phone disappearances and the challenges faced in recovery.
Ownership and Recovery Process Details
The recovered phones primarily belonged to residents of Guwahati, but the list also includes owners from Sivasagar, Jorhat, and other districts, as well as individuals from different states. The recovery process involved identifying each device using its unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number and tracking its movement after complaints were officially filed by the owners.
So far, approximately 50% of the phones have been handed back to their owners, with the majority being from Guwahati. Notably, two owners are from Manipur, three from Nagaland, and five from Meghalaya, indicating the cross-regional impact of this initiative. Engti mentioned that more people are still coming forward to claim their devices, suggesting that the recovery efforts are ongoing and may yield further results.
This proactive approach by the Basistha police not only aids in reducing crime but also restores valuable property to citizens, reinforcing trust in law enforcement. The success story serves as a reminder for the public to report lost or stolen phones promptly to facilitate such recoveries.
