Woman's Half-Burnt Body Discovered in Dhanbad Residence
In a deeply unsettling incident under the jurisdiction of the Govindpur police station in Dhanbad, authorities recovered the half-burnt body of a woman from her residence. The discovery was made on Monday, sparking a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death and the subsequent handling of the body.
Victim Identified as Lipika Kumari
The deceased has been identified as Lipika Kumari, a 36-year-old woman. The incident occurred in a residential colony at Vastu Vihar. The house reportedly belonged to Sangeet Kumar, a retired scientist from the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research (CIMFR), who passed away in 2023. Lipika, his divorced daughter, lived in the property with her brother, Pranav Rajvardhan, aged 50. Another brother resides with his family approximately 2 kilometers away in a different locality.
Brother's Claim and Neighbourhood Dynamics
According to police statements, Pranav Rajvardhan claimed that he attempted to cremate Lipika's body inside the bathroom of their home. He alleged that this drastic action was taken after neighbours refused to assist him following her death. Local residents have provided additional context, suggesting that Lipika was suffering from depression and that Pranav also had mental health issues. Over time, the family had become increasingly isolated from the community, with minimal interaction with neighbours. However, police officials have declined to confirm these details, emphasizing that the cause of death and other aspects will be clarified only after the post-mortem examination.
Timeline of Events and Police Response
Local sources indicate that Lipika Kumari died on the night of April 7. Pranav allegedly informed neighbours about her death, but they reportedly did not believe him or offer any assistance. In a state of panic, he then attempted the cremation within the bathroom. Suspicion arose when a foul smell began emanating from the house, prompting neighbours to alert the police on Monday. As of now, Pranav has not been taken into custody by the authorities.
Vishnu Rout, the officer-in-charge of Govindpur police station, provided an update on the case. He stated, "Police recovered the half-burnt body from the flat. It has been sent for post-mortem. Further action will be taken based on the report." The investigation is ongoing, with police focusing on gathering evidence and awaiting the post-mortem results to determine the exact cause of death and any potential legal implications.
Community Isolation and Mental Health Concerns
The incident has highlighted issues of community isolation and mental health in the area. Neighbours described the family as reclusive, with limited social interactions, which may have contributed to the lack of immediate help. While police are proceeding cautiously, the case underscores the need for awareness and support systems for individuals dealing with mental health challenges and social alienation.
