Violence Erupts During Sant Ravidas Jayanti Procession in Haridwar Village
A peaceful religious procession turned deadly in Haridwar district on Sunday evening, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The incident occurred in Banarsi village under the jurisdiction of the Bhagwanpur police station, casting a shadow over the Sant Ravidas Jayanti celebrations organized by the Dalit community.
Fatal Clash Over Band Music
The violence reportedly erupted from a heated argument between two groups regarding the playing of a band during the traditional procession. Witnesses and police sources indicate that tensions escalated rapidly despite initial intervention by law enforcement officials.
Anand Kumar, a 20-year-old resident, tragically lost his life after sustaining gunshot wounds during the confrontation. He was pronounced dead while being transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Multiple Casualties and Police Response
Three additional individuals sustained serious injuries in the violent exchange:
- Vikas Kumar (brother of the deceased)
- Two other community members
All three victims suffered bullet injuries to their legs and are currently receiving medical attention at a local hospital. Medical authorities have confirmed their conditions are stable but under observation.
Escalation Despite Police Intervention
According to official statements, police personnel initially managed to curtail the procession and disperse the crowd when the argument first broke out. However, tensions resurfaced shortly afterward, leading to a more severe confrontation involving stone-pelting and firearm discharge.
SP (Rural) SC Suyal addressed the media regarding the incident, stating: "The situation is under control. The accused involved in the firing are absconding, and teams have been formed to arrest them."
