Man Dies in Haridwar Police Custody After Arrest for Forgery in Court Surety Case
In a tragic incident in Haridwar, a 36-year-old man died while in police custody on Tuesday, just a day after his arrest. The man, identified as Naresh Kumar, was taken into custody by Haridwar police on Monday evening for allegedly providing surety for an accused using forged affidavits in court.
Medical Emergency During Examination
Police reported that Naresh Kumar complained of chest pain on Tuesday morning while undergoing a mandatory medical examination at the Roshanbad Community Health Centre (CHC). As his condition rapidly deteriorated, he was immediately referred to the mela hospital for urgent care. Unfortunately, doctors at the hospital declared him brought dead upon arrival.
Investigation into the Cause of Death
A postmortem has been conducted to determine the exact cause of death, with preliminary findings suggesting that a heart attack may have led to his sudden demise. The police are awaiting the full autopsy report to confirm these initial observations.
Details of the Arrest and Allegations
SHO Nitesh Sharma of the Sidcul police station provided further details, stating that four accused, including Kumar, were arrested. They are alleged to have been involved in arranging bail sureties for unknown individuals in exchange for monetary gains by submitting fake affidavits in the Haridwar court.
"They were taken to CHC for medical examination before being produced in court. During the process, Naresh complained of chest pain and was shifted to mela hospital, where he died," Sharma explained, emphasizing the procedural steps followed by the police.
Context and Broader Implications
This incident raises serious questions about police custody procedures and the health monitoring of detainees. It comes amid heightened public scrutiny over custodial deaths in India, with calls for stricter protocols and transparency in such cases.
The police have assured a thorough investigation into both the forgery allegations and the circumstances surrounding Kumar's death. Authorities are also reviewing the medical facilities and response times to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
As the community grapples with this loss, the case underscores the need for vigilance in legal processes and the welfare of individuals in custody, highlighting ongoing challenges in law enforcement and judicial systems.
