A devastating road accident on the Grand Trunk Road in Hazaribag district resulted in the tragic deaths of three members of a single family and left six others with serious injuries on Wednesday. The horrific crash occurred when the car they were travelling in lost control and violently collided with a road divider.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The incident took place near the Panchmadhav–Gangatahi bridge on the four-lane stretch of the historic GT Road. According to police reports, the impact of the collision was so severe that the vehicle was completely mangled. The family was on a journey from Kulti in Asansol, West Bengal, to Gaya in Bihar to attend a wedding ceremony when the driver apparently lost control of the car.
Victims and Immediate Aftermath
The deceased have been identified as Poonam Devi (55), wife of Srinath Yadav; her son Jai Bhagwan Yadav (40); and her young granddaughter Aanshika Kumari (10). Authorities confirmed that all three succumbed to their injuries on the spot.
The six injured family members are Dharmendra Yadav (35), Shivam Kumar (12), Abhiraj Kumar, Mritunjay Kumar (8), Kaushalya Devi (wife of Jai Bhagwan Yadav), and Jyoti Kumari (24). All victims were initially rushed to the Barkatha subdivision hospital. Given the critical nature of their injuries, four of the patients were later referred to Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital (SBMCH) in Hazaribag for advanced care.
Investigation and Official Statements
Barhi sub-divisional police officer Ajit Kumar Vimal stated that a case has been registered and an investigation into the precise cause of the accident is underway. Preliminary assessment points towards driver fatigue. "The bodies have been sent for post-mortem. Possibly, the driver was exhausted and fell asleep while driving," Vimal said.
Providing an update on the condition of the injured, A K Purti, superintendent of SBMCH, said, "Patients are responding to the treatment." The community remains in shock following this heartbreaking incident on one of the region's major highways.
