Madras High Court Directs DSP-Led Probe into Tuticorin Girl's Murder Case
The Madras High Court has issued a significant directive in the investigation of the murder of a Class XII girl in Tuticorin district. On Monday, the court ordered the Vilathikulam Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to take charge of the probe, emphasizing the need for a thorough and transparent inquiry.
Court Hearing and Petitioner's Plea
The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by advocate K Mareeshwari. The petitioner not only sought a detailed investigation into the tragic incident but also requested the state government to provide compensation to the family members of the deceased girl. This legal intervention underscores the public concern over the handling of the case.
Police Suspensions and Departmental Actions
In response to the court's earlier orders, the Tuticorin District Superintendent of Police (SP) submitted a status report. The state government revealed that two police officers have been suspended due to delays in registering a First Information Report (FIR). Specifically, the inspector of police from the Vilathikulam All Women Police Station and a special sub-inspector from the Kulathur Police Station faced disciplinary action.
The state further confirmed that departmental proceedings will be initiated against these personnel, highlighting accountability measures in the wake of the incident.
Forensic and Technical Investigations Underway
To ensure a comprehensive examination, the postmortem of the girl's body was conducted by three professors, and the procedure was videographed for transparency. DNA samples from the deceased and five suspects have been sent to the Regional Forensic Lab in Madurai district for analysis, as stated in the state's submission.
Additionally, cyber crime officials are actively involved in the investigation, conducting technical analyses of mobile and digital data relevant to the case. The Kulathur inspector of police is leading the investigation under the supervision of the Tuticorin SP.
Court's Directives and Future Proceedings
A division bench comprising Justice N Sathish Kumar and Justice M Jothiraman considered the submissions and issued key directives. The bench ordered the Vilathikulam DSP to take over the investigation and specifically instructed the recording of audio-video statements from the girl's parents.
The judges also appealed to the parents to cooperate with the police, noting that their lack of cooperation has hindered the recording of statements. The court has mandated the police to file a further status report on the investigation's progress and scheduled the next hearing for April 2.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Monitoring
This case highlights critical issues in police responsiveness and judicial oversight in criminal investigations. The court's active involvement, including the suspension of officers and the push for forensic and technical analyses, aims to restore public trust and ensure justice is served.
As the investigation continues under the DSP's leadership, all eyes will be on the upcoming status report and the April 2 hearing for further developments in this heart-wrenching case.
