Jharkhand High Court Directs DGP to Submit Sealed Report on Police Assault Allegations

The Jharkhand High Court has issued a directive to the state's Director General of Police, Tadasha Mishra, requiring the submission of a sealed report concerning the alleged assault on a relative of a missing girl from Bokaro. This order was delivered during a hearing on Thursday, as the court addressed a habeas corpus petition filed by Rekha Devi, whose daughter has been missing since July 31, 2025.

Court Questions Police Actions and Orders Medical Examination

During the proceedings, the court expressed serious concerns over the police's conduct, specifically questioning what could have motivated the assault on Sabapad Mahto, Rekha Devi's uncle-in-law. The bench emphasized that Mahto, who belongs to the family of the missing victim, is not involved in any criminal case and should not have been targeted. According to earlier submissions, Mahto was allegedly picked up by the Pindrajoda police and taken to the station, where he was severely beaten, resulting in significant injuries.

In response, the court ordered that Mahto undergo a clinical examination at the military hospital in Ranchi. A team of doctors was instructed to assess his injuries thoroughly. Rekha Devi's counsel later informed the court that the medical report confirmed Mahto suffered head injuries, which may have caused further damage to his brain, highlighting the severity of the incident.

DGP Announces Committee and Suspension Amid Ongoing Investigation

Director General of Police Tadasha Mishra informed the court that a one-man committee, headed by a DIG-ranking officer, has been established to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter. Additionally, the officer-in-charge of the Pindrajoda police station has been suspended pending the investigation. The DGP's sealed report must be presented to the high court before the next hearing, scheduled for April 10, 2025.

The court's actions underscore its commitment to ensuring accountability and justice in this sensitive case, which involves both the disappearance of a young girl and allegations of police brutality against her family member. The ongoing legal proceedings aim to uncover the truth behind these events and provide recourse for the affected parties.
