The Allahabad High Court on Friday directed the Uttar Pradesh government to submit its reply on a habeas corpus writ petition filed on behalf of journalist Satyam Verma. Verma was arrested last month and subsequently booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) on allegations of instigating workers to commit violence during a protest in Noida.
Court's Directive
A division bench comprising Justice Salil Kumar Rai and Justice Devendra Singh instructed the state counsel to file a counter affidavit by July 13, which is the next date of hearing. The petition highlights serious procedural irregularities in the arrest and custodial transfer process, and accordingly seeks Verma's release along with the preservation of electronic and documentary evidence related to his detention.
Background of the Case
Verma, who was arrested from Lucknow on April 17, was separately booked on May 13 under the NSA. According to the Uttar Pradesh Police, Verma played a key role in the violence and arson during the workers' protest, as he allegedly attempted to disrupt public order by provoking people in various areas.
The Workers' Protest
The workers were protesting to demand a wage hike and improved working conditions. Reports indicate that on April 13, incidents of vehicle burning, trespassing, and stone pelting occurred in several locations. In response, police used lathicharge on the workers and detained hundreds, along with seven activists.
The court's directive comes amid concerns over the use of the NSA and the rights of journalists. The next hearing is scheduled for July 13, where the state government is expected to present its counter affidavit.
