Families Wait at GMCH-32 Mortuary After Building Collapse

Heart-rending scenes unfolded at the mortuary of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32, Chandigarh, on Sunday as family members and relatives of the two deceased — Tarun Jain and Tarun Kaushik — waited to claim their bodies after the post-mortem examination. The two men were among those who lost their lives in a recent building collapse.

Kaushik’s six-year-old daughter remained in a state of shock, her eyes searching for her father, while the third business partner, who had a narrow escape in the building collapse, stood silently in a corner. The emotional distress was palpable among all present.

Bodies Handed Over for Last Rites

The bodies were handed over to the families around noon, following which they left for their native places in Solan and Meerut to perform the last rites. “We don’t want to talk. Please leave us alone,” said one of the bereaved relatives, declining to speak further.

Hospital authorities confirmed that three of the five persons rescued from the debris had been discharged after receiving treatment for minor injuries. The remaining two victims were pronounced dead upon arrival or succumbed to their injuries.

Community in Mourning

The incident has left the local community in mourning, with many expressing condolences and support for the families. The exact cause of the building collapse is still under investigation, and authorities have promised a thorough inquiry to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The GMCH-32 mortuary, often a place of quiet grief, witnessed an outpouring of sorrow as the families prepared to lay their loved ones to rest.
