Jharkhand High Court Demands Comprehensive Report on Palamu Tiger Reserve Conservation Efforts
The Jharkhand High Court issued a directive on Thursday, compelling the state government to provide a detailed report outlining the steps taken for the conservation of the Palamu Tiger Reserve (PTR). This order came during a hearing where key officials, including the principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife) and the PTR field director, were present in court. They assured the bench that active measures are being implemented to protect and preserve this critical tiger habitat.
Government Presents Conservation Plans and Infrastructure Challenges
Advocate General Rajiv Ranjan, representing the government, presented the official map of the PTR before the division bench. He elaborated on the forest department's ongoing initiatives aimed at the proper upkeep and conservation of the reserve forest. Notably, the advocate general highlighted a significant infrastructure issue, informing the court that the railway line and roads crossing through the perimeter of the PTR will need to be relocated to safeguard the habitat of the wildcats, emphasizing the urgency of mitigating human-wildlife conflict.
Legal Proceedings and Future Hearings
The division bench, comprising Chief Justice M S Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar, was hearing a public interest litigation filed by Vikas Mahato concerning the conservation of the PTR. The court has scheduled the next hearing for April 16, indicating continued judicial oversight on this matter. Additionally, the high court has directed that the deputy commissioners of Latehar and Garhwa districts be added as parties in the case, broadening the scope of accountability and ensuring local administrative involvement in the conservation efforts.
