Himachal Pradesh Police Dismiss Four Anti-Drug STF Personnel in LSD Smuggling Scandal
In a significant crackdown on corruption within law enforcement, Himachal Pradesh Police have dismissed four personnel from its anti-drug special task force (STF) following their arrest for alleged involvement in a case involving the smuggling of the banned narcotic LSD. The dismissed officers include constables Nitesh and Ashok, along with head constables Rajesh Kumar and Sameer Kumar. All four were posted with the STF in Kullu, a region known for its scenic beauty but now marred by this drug-related scandal. Their arrests occurred on Thursday after their names emerged during an ongoing investigation into LSD smuggling.
Background of the LSD Smuggling Case
The case originated with the arrest of Sandeep Sharma, a resident of Moga in Punjab, and Priya Sharma, from Sirmaur, by Shimla police. During this operation, authorities seized 562 stamps of LSD, each weighing 11.6 grams, with an estimated market value of Rs 1 crore. Further investigation led to the identification of Neville Harrison from Kerala as the primary supplier, who was subsequently arrested in Gurgaon on March 13.
Alleged Misconduct by STF Personnel
According to police officers, the four accused STF cops intercepted Harrison in Bhuntar near Kullu on March 10 and seized 1,450 stamps of LSD from him. However, instead of following proper legal procedures, they allegedly stole 834 LSD stamps, returned the remaining 616 stamps to Harrison, and allowed him to walk free without any charges. This act of misconduct highlights a severe breach of trust within the anti-drug unit.
Impact on Anti-Drug Campaigns
The police spokesperson noted that with these four dismissals, the total number of cops sacked in recent drug-related cases in Himachal Pradesh has reached 21 under the state's anti-chitta campaign.
