Hisar Police Campaign Spurs 3 FIRs as Girls Break Silence on Online Harassment
Hisar: Police Drives Help Girls Report Online Harassment

In a significant development in Hisar, a dedicated campaign by the district's women's police team has empowered several girls and young women to break their silence on the rising menace of online harassment. The initiative, which involved extensive awareness drives, has already resulted in the registration of three First Information Reports (FIRs), with more cases under investigation.

Police Outreach Breaks the Wall of Silence

Alarmed by the increasing incidents of cyber harassment targeting girls and young women, and the common reluctance to report such crimes to families or authorities, Hisar Superintendent of Police Shashank Kumar Sawan launched a proactive outreach program. A special police team focused on women's safety conducted comprehensive awareness sessions across the district.

These drives were strategically held at numerous locations frequented by young people, including:

  • Schools and colleges
  • Coaching centres
  • Bus stands and railway stations
  • Public parks

The sessions focused on educating attendees about legal rights, women's safety protocols, and the importance of reporting digital crimes. This safe and supportive environment proved crucial, as several female students felt encouraged to share experiences they had previously kept hidden.

From Complaints to Concrete Legal Action

The police team's empathetic approach yielded immediate results. During the interactions, victims came forward with specific complaints, which were promptly acted upon.

In one case, a student from a coaching centre reported that a man was persistently threatening and harassing her under the false pretext of marriage. The police were informed on the spot and swiftly initiated legal proceedings against the accused.

Another student bravely disclosed that her photograph was being misused on various social media platforms. The special team took cognizance of her complaint and handled the matter according to the provisions of the law to stop the misuse.

In a particularly concerning instance, a minor school student reported being stalked by a man. Recognizing the seriousness of the complaint, the police immediately began an investigation and started the requisite legal process to ensure the child's safety.

Arrest Made in Obscene Comments Case

The campaign also led to a swift arrest in another serious case. A young woman approached the police with a complaint that a man was making obscene comments on social media and was further harassing her by sending related links and screenshots not only to her but also to her relatives.

Taking strong action, the police registered an FIR under stringent sections of the law. The accused was subsequently arrested, sending a clear message about the zero-tolerance policy towards such digital offences.

Investigations into other complaints received during the drive are currently underway. Police officials have indicated that more FIRs are likely to be registered once sufficient evidence is gathered in these ongoing probes.

The success of this initiative in Hisar highlights a critical need: creating accessible and trustworthy channels for reporting online harassment. By moving directly into community spaces, the women's police team has begun to dismantle the fear and stigma that often prevent victims from seeking justice, marking a positive step towards safer digital spaces for women in the district.
