Guwahati Schools Targeted by Hoax Bomb Threats During Saraswati Puja Celebrations

On the auspicious occasion of Saraswati Puja, two private schools in Guwahati were thrown into chaos after receiving bomb threat emails, sparking widespread panic among students, parents, and school authorities. The incident prompted immediate and decisive action from the city police on Friday, casting a shadow over the festive atmosphere.

Festive Day Marred by Security Scare

The day began with traditional prayers and celebrations but quickly took an alarming turn when school authorities reported the threats, which claimed the presence of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on their premises. City police swiftly mobilized to handle the situation, deploying resources to ensure safety. Although the threats were later confirmed to be a hoax, the timing raised significant concerns as it occurred just days ahead of Republic Day, a period already marked by heightened security vigilance across the nation.

Police Response and Investigation Details

DCP (west district) Numal Mahatto addressed the media on Friday, providing insights into the police's rapid response. "After receiving the news, our teams were stationed outside the institution and conducted an anti-sabotage (AS) check. Anti-bomb squads were deployed, and the entire vicinity was thoroughly searched, but no explosives or suspicious materials were found," he stated. This thorough inspection helped alleviate immediate fears but underscored the seriousness with which such threats are treated.

The DCP further revealed that the investigation uncovered the incident as a deliberate hoax, orchestrated by a criminal circle with malicious intent to disrupt the festive spirit. Mahatto identified the email as originating from one Rupan Kumar Dhar, and confirmed that the matter remains under active investigation. This revelation highlights the need for robust cybersecurity measures and public awareness to prevent such disruptive acts.

Enhanced Security Measures and Ongoing Vigilance

In response to the incident, police have initiated coordination with school authorities to bolster security. "We have begun coordinating with the school authorities and have personally visited the premises to assess and implement security arrangements. Inspections will continue at other educational institutions as well," Mahatto added. This proactive approach aims to prevent future incidents and ensure a safe environment for students and staff, particularly during sensitive periods like Republic Day.

The hoax bomb threats serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by educational institutions and the importance of swift law enforcement action. As Guwahati moves forward, authorities are focusing on strengthening security protocols and fostering community resilience against such threats.
