Holi Festivities Turn Tragic in Makhan Majra with Fatal Stabbing and Brutal Assault
What should have been a joyous celebration of Holi in Makhan Majra, Chandigarh, descended into a scene of horrific violence on Wednesday, resulting in the death of a young man and severe injuries to his family members. The incident, which occurred during a traditional Holi ritual, has shocked the local community and prompted a swift police response.
Violent Altercation Erupts During Holi Ritual
According to police reports, the tragedy unfolded during a Holi custom where participants tear each other's clothes as part of the festivities. This practice sparked a heated argument between 21-year-old Ankit and another individual identified as Arvind. The verbal confrontation quickly escalated into physical abuse and a scuffle, threatening to disrupt the celebratory atmosphere.
Ankit's father, Bhagwan Sahni, along with their relative Karan, intervened in an attempt to calm the situation. Their efforts temporarily defused the tension, providing a brief respite from the growing hostility between the two families. However, this peace proved to be short-lived and fragile.
Armed Retaliation Leads to Fatal Consequences
In a disturbing turn of events, Arvind allegedly returned to the scene later with his minor son and other relatives, this time armed with sharp-edged weapons. The group launched a vicious attack on Ankit and his family members, transforming the Holi celebration into a battleground.
Ankit sustained a critical stab wound to his stomach during the assault. He was rushed immediately to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32, but medical professionals declared him dead upon arrival. The young man's life was tragically cut short during what should have been a festive occasion.
Bhagwan Sahni suffered multiple injuries in the attack, including the complete severing of one ear—a particularly brutal wound that highlights the extreme violence of the assault. Family relative Karan received significant injuries as well, requiring eight stitches on his hand. All accused individuals fled the scene immediately after committing the violent acts, leaving behind a traumatized community.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Based on statements collected from the injured victims and neighbors who witnessed the horrific incident, the Mauli Jagran police have registered a formal murder case against Arvind, Bobby, and other involved parties. Law enforcement authorities are currently examining CCTV footage from the area to gather additional evidence and identify all participants in the violent clash.
A comprehensive manhunt has been launched to trace and apprehend the absconding suspects. The police investigation aims to bring all responsible parties to justice while providing closure to the grieving family and concerned community members.
Context of Recent Violence in Chandigarh
This tragic incident occurs against a backdrop of similar violent episodes in the Chandigarh region. In January of this year, a 21-year-old youth was stabbed to death in Sector 38 while returning from a court hearing. Police later arrested two teenagers in connection with that case, revealing a long-standing feud between the involved parties that had previously resulted in altercations at multiple locations including Bapudham, Sector 17, and Sector 25.
February witnessed two additional stabbing fatalities in the area. On February 21, a 35-year-old woman named Seema was stabbed to death by her neighbor in Daria village after she resisted a sexual assault attempt. The accused did not attempt to escape and was arrested at the scene. The following day, on February 22, a 23-year-old woman was stabbed to death in Sector 36 park by a spurned lover after she rejected his marriage proposal.
This recent tragedy also echoes a similar Holi-related incident from March 2025, when a man named Ankit was stabbed to death in Sector 25 after an argument over smearing colors during the festival. In that case, the accused Kunal and his friends forcibly applied color to the victim, and when he resisted, they attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon.
The pattern of violence during festive occasions raises serious concerns about community safety and conflict resolution mechanisms. As police continue their investigation into the Makhan Majra incident, community leaders and authorities are calling for greater awareness and preventive measures to ensure that celebrations remain peaceful and safe for all participants.
