Hubballi Police Intensify Crackdown on Cricket Betting During IPL Season

Police in Hubballi have registered a total of 28 cases of cricket betting in the city since the commencement of the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches on March 28. This includes six specific cases handled at the Old Hubballi police station under the Police Commissionerate. Despite ongoing police awareness campaigns, cricket betting activities are gradually increasing in the area, with many youths continuing to place bets on matches.

Arrests and Seizures Highlight Enforcement Efforts

Law enforcement authorities have arrested 50 individuals involved in these illegal betting operations and confiscated cash amounting to Rs 6.6 lakh. According to a police source, since January, a broader tally shows 40 cases registered, 64 persons arrested, and Rs 6.4 lakh seized in connection with betting incidents. The gambling allegedly occurs through various mobile applications and phone calls, prompting police to issue numerous warnings to participants engaged in these unlawful activities.

Official Statements on the Betting Menace

Shruti NS, the deputy commissioner of police for law and order, confirmed to TOI that the department has registered approximately 40 cases and arrested 64 persons. "Most of the cases were registered at Old Hubballi police station. We are monitoring such elements continuously," she stated. "During rowdy parades, we are informing them not to involve in such gambling, giving them past examples. Betting is very dangerous as they can lose money and life. We have seen such cases, including suicides and suffering due to financial distress."

A police inspector provided further details, noting that around six cases have been registered recently. "In a major case, police seized Rs 5.5 lakh. A spot raid was conducted at Anand Nagar. We have seized amounts ranging from Rs 2,000 to 10,000 in these gambling instances," he informed. "We will be informing them about gambling and betting cases, telling them not to fall into this act."

Community Calls for Broader Awareness and Prevention

Babu Busad, a sports enthusiast from Hubballi, emphasized that police efforts alone may not fully curb betting. "Parents should be educated and should be aware of such elements and prevent their wards from being involved. Parents of students must also monitor their wards. Many have suffered and lost lives due to betting. A lot of awareness and strict prevention of gambling are essential," he added, highlighting the need for community-wide action to address this issue.
