Accused Claims Humiliation Motivated Lecturer Stabbing on Mumbai Local Train
In a shocking revelation from an ongoing investigation, the man accused of fatally stabbing a college lecturer on a Mumbai local train has told police that he was driven by feelings of humiliation. Omkar Shinde, currently in custody for the attack on NM College lecturer Alok Kumar Singh, stated to authorities that he felt deeply insulted after being shoved and reprimanded in front of female passengers.
Details of the Confrontation and Attack
According to police officials familiar with the case, the incident unfolded on a Borivali-bound train this past Saturday. Two women were standing near the footboard, followed by lecturer Alok Kumar Singh and a fellow professor. Omkar Shinde was positioned behind this group.
The accused claimed that when he attempted to push ahead, Singh shoved him back and questioned whether he could not see the women standing ahead. The women reportedly looked back at the commotion, which Shinde said made him feel profoundly humiliated. Police noted that Shinde appeared visibly angry and short-tempered while recounting these events during interrogation.
Weapon and Intentions
Shinde told investigators that he then remembered carrying a tweezer used for imitation jewellery work in his sling bag. He removed the implement and decided to take revenge by poking Singh before fleeing the scene. He consistently maintained that he had no intention to kill the lecturer, only to cause minor injury and escape.
As the train slowed down approaching Malad station, Shinde punctured Singh once on the left side of the abdomen with the tweezer and immediately ran away. He fled fearing retaliation from Singh, unaware that the injury would prove fatal.
Aftermath and Investigation
The Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP), leading the investigation, confirmed that the tweezer used in the attack has not yet been recovered. Shinde reportedly threw it away while traveling home but has not disclosed the exact location. On Tuesday, police conducted a thorough search at Shinde's residence in Kurar Village without finding the weapon.
Shinde was taken to the scene for a detailed panchnama, and statements from his family members were recorded. His father informed police that his son has longstanding temper issues, corroborating the police assessment of his short-tempered nature.
Medical Response and Fatal Injury
Responding to questions about why Singh was taken to Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivali instead of a closer facility in Malad, a senior railway official explained the protocol. "They admit patients only in government hospitals as per procedure and also avoid private hospitals as there is no clarity on who will foot the medical bill," the official stated.
The injury inflicted by the tweezer was approximately five inches deep. While external bleeding appeared minimal, officials believe massive internal bleeding led to Singh's death. Shinde claimed he was unaware of the fatality when he returned to the railway station the following day and was shocked upon his arrest.
