In a shocking incident that exposes glaring security lapses, a 30-year-old woman was shot dead allegedly by her husband inside a police station in Uttar Pradesh's Hardoi district on Monday, January 12, 2026. The husband, identified as Anoop Yadav, was immediately arrested, while two police personnel were suspended for negligence in the case.
The Fatal Encounter Inside Police Premises
According to the Hardoi police, the victim, Soni Yadav (28), had allegedly run away with a distant relative. Her husband, Anoop Yadav, a farmer, had subsequently filed a formal complaint. Based on his report, a case was registered at the Pali police station under BNS Section 87, which deals with kidnapping, abduction, or inducing a woman to compel her marriage.
Police teams traced Soni on Sunday, January 11. However, she stated that she had left of her own free will. She was brought to the Pali police station on Monday for a scheduled medical examination and to have her official statement recorded.
"Nothing Felt Right": Husband's Chilling Statement
The tragedy unfolded when Soni was standing near the police station mess, conversing with her husband, their 14-year-old son, her sister, and her uncle. In a sudden, violent move, Anoop Yadav pulled out a concealed country-made pistol and shot his wife in the back.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but succumbed to her injuries. When questioned by authorities about his motive for the brutal murder, Anoop Yadav allegedly gave a chillingly vague reply: "Mujhe kuch achha nahi lag raha tha" (Nothing felt right). The weapon used in the crime was seized from his possession.
Police Accountability and Ongoing Investigation
Taking serious note of the security breach, Hardoi Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Meena ordered the suspension of two police personnel for negligence. Those suspended are the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Vikram Chaudhary, and a woman constable, Sanjana Rajput, who was specifically assigned to Soni's security.
SP Meena stated that the Additional Superintendent of Police has been directed to conduct a detailed inquiry into all aspects of the case. Meanwhile, police confirmed that the man with whom Soni Yadav had initially gone away is still untraced. The investigation remains ongoing.
