Kerala Court Remands Husband in Wife's Suicide Case Over Alleged Domestic Cruelty
A court in Alathur, Kerala, on Wednesday remanded a 29-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the death of his wife on charges of domestic cruelty. The accused, identified as Abdul Rahman, a native of Erattakulam, was taken into custody following the tragic death of his wife Asna, a 20-year-old Plus Two student.
Police Action Based on Father's Complaint
Police acted on a formal complaint lodged by Asna's father, Haneefa of Kavassery. According to the police investigation, Asna was admitted to a private hospital in Alathur on March 27 after allegedly consuming rat poison. As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to hospitals in Ernakulam and later Kozhikode, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries on April 7.
Allegations of Foul Play and Harassment
In his complaint, Haneefa alleged that his daughter would not have taken poison on her own and accused her husband's family of administering it. Preliminary police investigations revealed that the victim had been subjected to severe mental harassment at her husband's house. Asna, the only daughter of Haneefa, had married Abdul Rahman a year ago while she was studying in Plus One and had continued her education after marriage.
Her family members alleged that sustained harassment by her husband's family led directly to her death. They claimed she was frequently ridiculed over her studies and was forced to complete extensive household chores before being allowed to attend school, creating an unbearable environment of psychological pressure.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
The arrest was executed by a police team led by Alathur Deputy Superintendent of Police A J Johnson. The case has drawn attention to issues of domestic cruelty and mental harassment within marital relationships, particularly involving young women pursuing education. The court's decision to remand the accused underscores the seriousness of the allegations as the investigation continues to unfold.
