Hyderabad Businessman Fatally Struck in Early Morning Hit-and-Run on Cable Bridge

In a tragic incident that has shocked the city, a 32-year-old businessman was killed after being run over by a Mercedes car on the Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge in the early hours of Sunday. The driver, who remains unidentified, abandoned the vehicle at the scene and fled, leaving behind a West Bengal-registered car that is now central to the police investigation.

Details of the Fatal Accident

According to Madhapur police, the victim, identified as Shyam Raj, a resident of Hafeezpet, was on the bridge with his wife around 3:15 AM. The couple had reportedly gone to send a parcel to a travel bus service and had a late-night dinner before heading home. While returning to Hafeezpet, they stopped briefly on the iconic cable bridge.

After parking their bike, Raj stood on the road while his wife was on the walkway. As he was taking pictures of her, a Mercedes car traveling from Jubilee Hills towards IKEA rammed into him. The impact was so severe that the vehicle flipped after hitting the railing. Raj suffered fatal injuries in the collision.

Immediate Aftermath and Failed Rescue Efforts

Passersby who witnessed the accident rushed to help both the victim and the accused driver, who managed to get out of the overturned vehicle. However, in the ensuing chaos, the driver managed to escape from the spot before authorities could arrive.

The injured businessman was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries around 4 PM on Sunday while still undergoing treatment.

Police Investigation and Challenges

Madhapur police have registered a case on charges of negligence causing death and are actively pursuing the investigation. When officers verified the records of the West Bengal-registered Mercedes, they discovered it was registered under a company name rather than an individual.

"At the time of the accident, only one person was in the car. As of now, he is at large," confirmed a police officer involved in the case.

The investigation faces significant challenges despite the presence of CCTV footage in the area. "Police said that though there was CCTV footage, it was not clear," making identification of the driver difficult. Authorities are exploring other forensic and investigative avenues to track down the perpetrator.

Broader Implications and Safety Concerns

This incident has raised serious questions about road safety on Hyderabad's prominent bridges, particularly during late-night hours. The Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge, known for its architectural significance and popularity among visitors, now becomes the site of a tragic loss of life.

The hit-and-run nature of the crime adds another layer of concern for law enforcement and citizens alike. Police are urging anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts of the driver to come forward as they continue their search for the individual responsible for this fatal collision.
