Hyderabad Police Intensify Anti-Drug Drive with New Testing Kits
In a significant move to curb drug abuse, the Hyderabad City Police announced on Friday that every police station in the city has now been equipped with specialized drug testing kits. Officers have received explicit directives to utilize these kits on individuals exhibiting suspicious behavior during nighttime patrols.
Commissioner's Hospital Visit Spurs Action
The announcement came directly after Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar conducted an inspection visit to Gandhi Hospital. This facility is currently hosting a newly-established de-addiction center where numerous individuals with criminal records, known as history-sheeters, are undergoing treatment for substance addiction.
During the visit, N Vani, the Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital, provided a comprehensive briefing to police officials on the operational details and protocols of the de-addiction center. The center represents a critical component of the city's strategy to address drug dependency through medical intervention rather than solely punitive measures.
Alarming Test Results Reveal Widespread Drug Use
Police authorities disclosed startling statistics that underscore the urgency of their new initiative. Out of 239 history-sheeters who were recently subjected to drug testing, a staggering 188 individuals tested positive for various illicit substances. This represents nearly 79% of those screened, highlighting a profound correlation between criminal histories and substance abuse within this demographic.
Currently, 35 of these individuals are receiving intensive treatment at Gandhi Hospital's de-addiction facility. According to the treatment protocol established at the center, patients will remain under medical supervision for a standard period of 15 days to undergo detoxification and initial rehabilitation processes.
