Idukki Priest Arrested for Sexual Assault of Teen During Counseling Session
In a shocking incident from Idukki district, Peruvanthanam police have arrested a parish priest for allegedly sexually assaulting a young woman who had approached him for counseling. The accused has been identified as Santosh Mathew (53), the vicar of the CSI Church at Paloorukavu and a native of Pampady.
Details of the Alleged Assault
The incident in question occurred on February 7. According to police reports, the 19-year-old woman had traveled from Kanjirappally to the Paloorukavu church along with her mother. She was seeking counseling to help overcome severe exam anxiety. The priest instructed the girl's mother to remain inside the main church building to pray, stating that he needed to speak with the girl privately for the counseling session.
He then escorted the young woman to the parsonage room attached to the church, which is typically used for private meetings and counseling. It was in this secluded room that the priest allegedly sexually assaulted her, as per the police complaint.
Investigation and Arrest
Following the traumatic incident, the victim sought medical treatment at a local hospital. Hospital authorities later informed the Peruvanthanam police, who promptly recorded the young woman's detailed statement and registered a formal case. An intensive investigation was launched immediately.
The accused priest, Santosh Mathew, had reportedly been absconding after the allegations surfaced. He was moving between various locations in neighboring Tamil Nadu in an attempt to evade capture. However, a dedicated police team managed to track his movements.
On Sunday, the police successfully arrested Mathew from near the Velankanni church in Tamil Nadu. The arrest operation was led by Peruvanthanam Station House Officer (SHO) Thrideep Chandran. Following his apprehension, the accused was produced before the appropriate court and has been remanded into judicial custody as the legal proceedings continue.
