Illegal LPG Cylinders Trigger Explosive Fire in Lucknow's Vikas Nagar
A routine Wednesday evening in Lucknow's Vikas Nagar area turned into a scene of chaos and destruction when a fire broke out and rapidly escalated into a devastating inferno. Officials have confirmed that the presence of nearly 50 illegally hoarded LPG cylinders was the primary factor behind the catastrophic escalation.
Chain Reaction of Explosions Engulfs Shanties
The cylinders, which were stored inside makeshift shanties, triggered a series of powerful explosions that set off a dangerous chain reaction. Within mere minutes, the entire cluster of structures was engulfed in flames, reducing several shanties to ashes.
Local resident Aman Gupta described the terrifying sequence of events: "We heard 10-15 loud explosions as cylinders began bursting one after another. The intensity was overwhelming, and within minutes, several shanties were completely destroyed."
Eyewitness Accounts Describe Panic and Chaos
Multiple eyewitnesses reported hearing loud blasts and seeing thick black smoke fill the sky. Prayas Chaturvedi, who works at a nearby automobile showroom, said he stepped outside after hearing the explosions to witness a massive fire raging uncontrollably.
Rajeev Verma, who was crossing Kukrail Bridge at the time, recalled: "There were continuous blasts that created confusion and fear. People stopped their vehicles, unsure of what was happening. The sky was completely filled with thick black smoke that was visible from a considerable distance."
Another commuter, Shalini Mishra, described how the explosions triggered widespread panic across the area: "We could feel the impact of the blasts even from a distance. The force was so strong that traffic came to a complete standstill as people feared the fire might spread to adjacent areas."
Firefighting Efforts Hampered by Safety Concerns
The repeated blasts created significant challenges for firefighting teams, who were forced to maintain a safe distance at several points to avoid injury. This necessary precaution unfortunately delayed efforts to douse the flames and contain the spread of the fire.
Officials have clarified that not all cylinders exploded during the incident. A senior fire department official provided crucial details: "Multiple LPG cylinders were discovered at the site. While some exploded and significantly escalated the fire's intensity, others were safely removed in time to prevent further damage and potential casualties."
Investigation Launched into Illegal Storage
The district administration and police have now launched a comprehensive investigation into the illegal storage of LPG cylinders at the site. Authorities suspect that this unauthorized hoarding was a major contributing factor behind both the rapid escalation of the fire and the extensive destruction that followed.
This incident has raised serious concerns about fire safety regulations and the dangers of illegally storing hazardous materials in residential areas. The investigation aims to identify those responsible for the illegal storage and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
