Indian National Faces Serious Charges After Derby Car Attack Leaves Seven Injured
A 36-year-old Indian man, identified as Sandhu Ponnachan and believed to be from Kerala, has been formally charged with deliberately driving a car into pedestrians in Derby, United Kingdom, resulting in seven people sustaining serious injuries. The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday, March 28, at approximately 9:30 PM local time.
Court Proceedings and Serious Charges
Ponnachan appeared before the Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, where he faced a total of nine charges. The charges include six counts of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, one count of attempted GBH with intent, one count of dangerous driving, and one count of possession of a bladed article. During the hearing, the accused spoke only to confirm his name and address and did not enter a plea. The court remanded him in custody, with his next appearance scheduled for April 29 at Derby Crown Court. No application for bail was made.
Details of the Violent Incident
The attack unfolded when a black car mounted the pavement and ploughed into pedestrians. The victims, comprising four men and three women aged between 36 and 52, were all hospitalized with serious injuries. Authorities arrested Ponnachan shortly after the incident on suspicion of attempted murder, finding him in a visibly damaged vehicle. While four of the injured have since been discharged from hospital, the severity of the event has shocked the local community.
Background of the Accused
Sandhu Ponnachan is an Indian citizen who relocated to Derby in April 2025. His professional background, as indicated on his LinkedIn profile, includes seeking employment as a logistics manager. He previously held this role at Caterpillar Inc until March 2026 and possesses qualifications to operate a forklift and work as a security guard. Additionally, he is listed as a director of Greeshmam Ltd.
An examination of his social media activity reveals a mix of personal and political posts. On Facebook, Ponnachan shared content praising India's rise as a global power and posted a video questioning "Why did Kerala go bankrupt?" alongside posts in Malayalam. His profile also features religious material, including a photo of Verse 10 of Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī’s Upadeśāmṛta (Nectar of Instruction), videos of paintings depicting Lord Hanuman and the Bhagavad Gita, and a repost by Congress politician Shashi Tharoor showing the Ram Lalla idol at Ram Mandir. One notable repost blamed the Congress-led UPA regime for the "mysterious deaths of India's nuclear scientists."
Social Media Backlash and Community Response
The revelation of Ponnachan's nationality has triggered a significant wave of racist abuse targeting Indians on various social media platforms. In response, the Friends of India Society International UK issued a public statement urging individuals not to allow the actions of one person to stigmatize an entire community. The statement emphasized the importance of unity and condemned the prejudiced reactions.
Examples of the abusive posts include one user on X stating, "Mass Immigration has been a disaster for this country. We need deportations." Another comment read, "Annexing India and restoring the Raj will protect the world against India," while a third user falsely claimed, "You shouldn't be surprised. Look what Indians are doing to Canada. They are a crime syndicate." These remarks highlight the concerning spread of xenophobia and misinformation following the incident.
As the legal process continues, authorities are investigating the motives behind the attack, and the community grapples with the aftermath of both the physical violence and the subsequent online hatred.
