Indian Man Jailed 34 Years for Rape, Torture in UK

LONDON: An Indian man residing in the United Kingdom has been sentenced to 34 years in prison for the kidnapping, rape, torture, and assault of a woman who declined to transport a suitcase containing unknown items from Thailand to the UK.

Details of the Crime

Gagandeep Singh (34), an Indian national living in Wandsworth, southwest London, was convicted on Friday on two counts of rape, false imprisonment, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, and kidnapping. The conviction followed a jury trial at Isleworth Crown Court in February.

The court heard that the victim, a 24-year-old woman, grew suspicious when asked to deliver the suitcase from Thailand to the UK in June 2024. After she refused, upon arriving at Birmingham Airport, she was forced into a car by masked men and driven to London.

Prolonged Torture

The woman was taken to a house in Hanwell, west London, where she endured prolonged torture at the hands of Singh, who also raped her on two occasions, according to court testimony. The torture lasted over a day and included being punched in the face, beaten, stripped, whipped, burned, and raped.

Eventually, the captors released the woman, threatening her not to disclose what had happened. However, she informed her mother, who contacted the police and filed an initial third-party report. Six weeks later, the woman felt able to provide a full account to the police. The clothing she wore during the kidnapping had been preserved at her home and was submitted for forensic examination, which yielded a one-in-a-million positive DNA match for Singh, who was already in prison on remand for an unrelated offense.

Sentencing and Deportation

Singh will be deported with no right of re-entry after serving his sentence. The case highlights the severity of crimes involving human trafficking and violence, and the effective use of forensic evidence in bringing perpetrators to justice.
