Indian-Origin Man Convicted in Brutal Sister-in-Law Murder Case
Varinder Singh, an Indian-origin man, has been found guilty of second-degree murder for the death of his sister-in-law, Kuljeet Kaur, in a violent 2022 incident. The conviction follows a trial that revealed harrowing details of the attack, where Kaur was stabbed 37 times with an eight-inch kitchen knife.
Background and Motive of the Crime
During the trial, Singh did not plead guilty and presented a defense rooted in family tensions. He stated that he felt looked down upon by his wife's family due to his lower social class. Singh claimed he was forced into marrying Kaur's sister and accused the sisters of stealing money he had saved to purchase a new truck.
On the day of the murder, Singh testified that Kaur threatened to kill him. In response, he brought a knife, leading to a confrontation where his wife allegedly grabbed him from behind. This, he argued, resulted in a knife fight that culminated in Kaur's death.
Details of the Fatal Attack
The attack was particularly brutal, with Singh stabbing Kaur 12 times in her torso and inflicting additional wounds on other body parts. Kaur attempted to defend herself as the violence escalated from their home onto the streets. Shockingly, Singh interrupted the assault twice: first to retrieve his phone and then to get his shoes and keys, before fleeing the scene in a BMW sedan.
He was apprehended approximately 45 minutes later near a Raley’s supermarket in Rohnert Park. During the trial, Singh admitted to stabbing Kaur twice out of fear but claimed he then blacked out and could not recall the subsequent actions. “I lost my brain at the time and I didn’t know what I was doing,” Singh said through a Punjabi interpreter, as reported by the Press Democrat.
Prosecution's Case and Jury Deliberation
Sonoma County District Attorney Jason Riehl argued that Singh had multiple opportunities to de-escalate the situation but chose to continue the stabbing. Neighbors who tried to intervene were told by Singh to go away. The jury deliberated on whether the murder was premeditated, considering the severity and persistence of the attack.
Investigators revealed that Singh, a long-haul truck driver, had a history of a bad temper and had previously threatened to kill family members. The killing occurred after Kaur learned that Singh had threatened to attack her sister with a hammer and tried to persuade her not to accompany him on an upcoming trip.
This case highlights the tragic consequences of domestic conflicts and the legal complexities surrounding claims of self-defense versus premeditated violence.
