Indore Airbnb Dispute Escalates into Fatal Car Attack, Killing Woman Engineer
In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, an 18-year-old boy in Indore deliberately drove his car into a group of residents, resulting in the tragic death of a woman software engineer and leaving several others injured. The violent episode unfolded on Wednesday night, stemming from a long-simmering dispute over the commercial use of his parents' penthouse, which was rented out through Airbnb.
Background of the Tragic Incident
The deceased has been identified as Shampa Pathak Pandey, a software engineer who had recently moved into Shiv Vatika Township with her husband, Saurabh, their two young sons aged 7 and 10, and her parents-in-law on March 13. According to Saurabh, tensions had been brewing among residents regarding the penthouse located in the Sagarshree Enclave building.
Residents had repeatedly voiced their objections to the frequent movement of outsiders, foreigners, couples, and youngsters on the residential premises, citing concerns over security and privacy. Police officials confirmed that these complaints were at the heart of the escalating conflict.
The Night of Violence
On Wednesday night, the situation reached a boiling point when some residents allegedly switched off the electricity supply to the penthouse. This prompted the penthouse owner, Kuldeep Choudhary, to come downstairs and retaliate by cutting power to other flats, sparking a heated argument that quickly turned violent.
Kuldeep then called his wife and their 18-year-old son, Mohnish, to the scene. Mohnish immediately joined the fray, attacking one resident and ripping out a chunk of his hair before assaulting several others. As residents attempted to restrain Mohnish, who was trying to flee, they shut the gates of the building.
The Deadly Car Attack
In a desperate and horrifying move, Mohnish jumped into his car with his mother and deliberately slammed it into the residents twice. First, he struck the wife of a guard present at the location. Then, he drove directly toward Shampa and Saurabh. While Saurabh managed to escape, Shampa was hit and thrown onto the bonnet of the vehicle.
As the car continued moving before ultimately crashing into a wall, Shampa became trapped between the vehicle and the wall, sustaining critical head injuries. She was rushed to Bombay Hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
"The accused could have stopped the car but chose not to. After hitting my wife once, Mohnish did not hit the brakes and instead ran over her," a devastated Saurabh stated.
Police Investigation and Legal Action
Assistant Commissioner of Police Parag Saini confirmed that a case of murder and attempted murder has been registered against both Kuldeep and Mohnish Choudhary. Police have taken the CCTV cameras' DVR into custody for detailed examination. Investigators are also scrutinizing the details of visitors who accessed the penthouse through Airbnb, as part of their ongoing probe into the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
This incident highlights the severe consequences of unresolved neighborhood disputes and raises serious questions about the regulation of short-term rental properties in residential areas. The community remains in mourning as authorities work to bring justice for Shampa Pathak Pandey and the other victims.
