Major Fire Erupts at Indore IDA Residential Building, Exposing Critical Safety Lapses
A significant fire broke out early Monday morning on the sixth floor of an Indore Development Authority (IDA) residential building located in Scheme Number 136, near Niranjanpur. The blaze caused extensive property damage, but fortunately, no casualties were reported as all residents managed to evacuate the premises safely and promptly.
Timely Evacuation Prevents Tragedy
The fire originated around 6 am in the flat of resident Ravi Malviya. According to Fire Department ASI Sushil Dubey, Malviya and his wife were in a separate room when the fire erupted in another part of their apartment. The suspected cause is a short circuit triggered by a massager that had been left switched on overnight.
Upon noticing smoke, Malviya immediately alerted his neighbors, facilitating the safe evacuation of everyone from the multi-story building. This quick thinking and community response were crucial in preventing any loss of life.
Intense Blaze and Firefighting Efforts
The flames were so intense that they spread to the balcony of the seventh floor, destroying belongings stored there. Firefighters faced significant challenges, having to connect over six pipes and climb the building's internal stairs to access the sixth floor. It took approximately one and a half hours and 10,000 liters of water to completely extinguish the fire.
Exposed Safety Failures and Official Response
The incident highlighted critical safety deficiencies. Although the building is equipped with a fire safety system, the equipment was inaccessible during the emergency, raising serious concerns about preparedness.
Local MLA Ramesh Mendola visited the site alongside IDA officials to assess the damage. Mendola directed IDA CEO Parikshit Zade to ensure strict compliance with the Fire Prevention and Fire Safety Act. He emphasized that fire safety equipment must be regularly inspected and maintained in functional condition to prevent future tragedies and ensure immediate relief during emergencies.
"Resident Welfare Association of the building called Harsingar has recently been formed," Zade stated, adding that residents will soon receive training on how to use the fire safety equipment installed in the building.
