Indore Police Launch Major Crackdown on Hazardous Holi Colors

In a decisive move to protect public health, the Indore police have initiated a comprehensive city-wide operation targeting the sale of dangerous chemical-based colors ahead of the Holi festival. Authorities conducted surprise inspections at numerous markets, seizing substantial quantities of industrial-grade substances that were being illegally marketed for festive use. Multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered against vendors involved in this hazardous trade.

Surprise Market Inspections Uncover Illegal Sales

Police teams carried out unannounced checks in major commercial areas, focusing on shops selling Holi colors and gulal. The inspections were not merely superficial; officers meticulously examined the quality of products available, issuing stern warnings to traders against stocking or selling colors containing toxic chemicals. These substances pose significant risks to skin, eyes, and respiratory health, especially during the vibrant celebrations of Holi.

Seizure of Industrial Chemicals in Banganga and Beyond

In the Banganga area, police confiscated industrial-use colors that were explicitly labeled as unsuitable for direct skin application. Despite clear warnings, these products were being retailed for Holi festivities. Additionally, responding to complaints from local mohalla meetings, authorities seized 87 sacks, weighing 2.175 quintals, of a substance known locally as Ramraj. Residents reported that Ramraj is frequently thrown at women and children, causing severe eye irritation and discomfort. Since this product is strictly intended for industrial purposes, its use as a festive color is strictly prohibited.

FIRs Filed and Further Confiscations Across the City

The Central Kotwali North police unit seized nearly 100 sacks of Ramraj from a shop and warehouse in their jurisdiction. In the Annapurna area, police registered three FIRs against vendors caught selling colors manufactured exclusively for industrial use. During inspections near Dussehra Maidan and Futikothi, police confiscated banned chemical-based colors from individuals including Prakash Sahu of Rishi Palace, Kishore Agrawal of Rishi Nagar, and Dharam Lodhi of Dwarkapuri. Separate cases have been filed against each of them, underscoring the seriousness of the violations.

Health Risks and Regulatory Enforcement

The crackdown highlights the critical health hazards associated with using industrial chemicals as festive colors. These substances can lead to skin allergies, eye damage, and respiratory issues, particularly affecting vulnerable groups like children and the elderly. By enforcing strict regulations and conducting thorough inspections, the Indore police aim to ensure a safer Holi celebration for all residents, emphasizing the importance of using natural, non-toxic colors instead.
