Indore Sewer Chamber Tragedy Claims Lives of Two Sanitation Workers
In a devastating incident in Indore, two sanitation workers employed by the Indore Municipal Corporation lost their lives after entering a sewer chamber near Choithram Hospital on Monday evening. The victims have been identified as Karan and Ajay, whose tragic deaths have highlighted severe safety lapses in municipal operations.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to DCP Krishna Lalchandani, the event unfolded around 6:30 pm near the Choithram Mandi Gate under Zone 13 limits. The workers were part of a team that had just emptied a septic tank and arrived at the location to discharge collected water into a primary line chamber using a de-watering vehicle.
During the process, the suction tanker pipe accidentally slipped and fell into the open chamber. In an attempt to retrieve it, sanitation worker Karan allegedly stepped into the chamber without informing his colleagues. He is believed to have slipped and fallen inside, prompting fellow worker Ajay to enter in a rescue attempt. Both men were later found unresponsive.
Suspected Cause and Immediate Response
Officials suspect that toxic gases present inside the chamber led to suffocation, causing the fatalities. The workers were quickly pulled out and rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were declared dead after medical examination. Police have stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed following a post-mortem report.
Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav and Municipal Commissioner Kshitij Singhal, along with other officials, promptly reached the spot to review the situation. They later visited the victims' homes to offer condolences and support to the grieving family members.

Commissioner Kshitij Singhal emphasized that preliminary information indicates the workers were not engaged in routine cleaning but were attempting to retrieve equipment. A further inquiry is underway to establish the complete sequence of events and assess compliance with safety protocols.
