Mumbai: Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, has approached the special CBI court seeking permission to travel abroad. This comes after the Supreme Court in April rejected her plea, directing her to move the trial court where proceedings against her are pending.
Background of the Case
In February 2025, the Supreme Court had also dismissed her earlier plea, observing, "There is no guarantee that you will come back." Mukerjea now seeks permission to visit the United Kingdom and Spain to activate her bank accounts there and to make changes to her will.
CBI's Allegations
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alleges that Indrani Mukerjea, along with her former husbands Sanjeev Khanna and Peter Mukerjea — who was still married to her in 2015 — and their driver Shyamvar Rai, conspired to abduct and murder Sheena Bora. The plot also included an attempt to murder her son Mekhail Bora.
According to the CBI, on April 24, 2012, Indrani, Khanna, and Rai abducted Sheena in a car, administered sedatives, strangled her, and disposed of her body in a forest in Pen, Raigad district. The crime came to light in August 2015. Rai later turned approver and deposed as a prosecution witness.
Current Status
The special CBI court will now hear Indrani Mukerjea's plea for travel permission. The Supreme Court had previously stated that the trial court is the appropriate forum to consider such requests.
