Mobile Internet Services Suspended in Kishtwar Amid Intensified Anti-Terror Operations

In a significant security measure, mobile internet services have been temporarily suspended in the Chhatru sub-division of Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district. This action comes as security forces intensify their operations to flush out a group of suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists who have been hiding in the area since early this month.

Background of the Encounter and Casualties

The current operations follow a tragic encounter on January 18 in Chhatru's Singhpora area, where Havildar Gajendra Singh of the Special Forces was killed and seven soldiers sustained injuries. Security forces believe the terrorist group consists of three individuals. In the aftermath of the initial clash, forces discovered and dismantled an underground hideout used by the terrorists. A substantial cache of rations was seized, including atta, rice, pulses, spices, and packets of Maggie, sufficient to sustain three to four people for at least two months, according to official sources.

Subsequent Engagements and Ongoing Search

Following the January 18 encounter, security forces re-established contact with the terrorists on two additional occasions—January 22 and January 25. Despite these engagements, the terrorists managed to evade capture both times. In response, security personnel have continued their search and combing operations, advancing deeper into the surrounding forests from multiple directions to tighten the cordon.

Details of the Internet Suspension

The suspension of mobile internet services was ordered by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of the Jammu Zone, who acts as the authorized officer under the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024. This directive was later endorsed by the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department. Officials stated that the measure aims to prevent the misuse of mobile data services by anti-national elements and to safeguard India's sovereignty, integrity, and the security of Jammu and Kashmir.

The affected areas include a six-kilometer radius around Singhpora, Chingam, and Chatroo. As per the official order, mobile data services—covering 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks—will remain suspended until 11:59 PM on Friday, January 30, 2026.

Historical Context of Terrorist Activity in the Region

Kishtwar's Chhatru area has been a hotspot for terrorist activity over the past two years. In April of the previous year, security forces and police conducted a joint operation in challenging conditions, including two to three feet of snow and adverse weather, resulting in the elimination of three terrorists. These individuals were reportedly responsible for the deaths of a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and two village defence guards in separate attacks during 2024.

The ongoing operations underscore the persistent security challenges in the region, with forces remaining vigilant to neutralize threats and restore peace.
