ITBP Constable Carries Mother's Severed Hand to Kanpur Police Commissioner's Office Alleging Medical Negligence
ITBP Constable Carries Severed Hand to Kanpur Police Office

Chaos erupted at the police commissioner's office in Kanpur on Tuesday when an ITBP constable arrived carrying his mother's severed hand and alleged medical negligence during her treatment.

Police Commissioner Orders Investigation

Police commissioner Raghubir Lal ordered the chief medical officer (CMO) to investigate the matter and assured that an FIR would be lodged after the investigation. The assurance brought some relief to the constable, who was accompanied by ITBP officials.

Constable's Allegations

ITBP constable Vikas Singh, originally from Alimau village in the Hathgam police station area of Fatehpur, told officers that his 56-year-old mother Nirmala Devi suffered from respiratory issues, constipation and weakness. He said she was initially seen at the ITBP hospital in Maharajpur and, after primary treatment, was referred to a higher centre included in the ITBP panel. He then admitted her to a private nursing home at Tatmill crossing for treatment on May 13.

He alleged that she was placed on a ventilator at the nursing home and that the hospital administration administered a wrong injection, after which her hand turned black and continued to swell. As her condition worsened, she was admitted to another private hospital on Bithoor Road in Baikunthpur. He said when the infection spread to her hand, doctors treating there suggested him to get it amputated and on May 17, they performed the surgery.

Vikas said that he tried to find out from the doctors, but nothing could be clarified as to why the infection occurred in the hand and why the hand had to be amputated. He alleged that this happened due to the negligence of the private nursing home located at Tatmill crossing. Strict action should be taken against the hospital operator and doctors.

Police Response

He said that he went to Rail Bazar police station to get an FIR registered against the private nursing home located at Tatmill crossing, but police did not pay heed to his complaint. The police commissioner referred the case to the CMO, demanding that a panel be constituted to conduct an investigation.
